Dimitsana, Houses, Mountain Background

About This Work
At Dimitsana, stone houses climb the hillside in tiers, their terracotta roofs rising toward pale bluish-gray peaks beyond.
The whole village feels so settled, as if it grew right out of the hillside. Its angular walls and rooftops climb toward those soft, bluish-gray peaks in the distance. The colors are all from the earth—ochre and sienna in the stone, quiet terracotta on the roofs. Just a touch of sage green pushes through. Look at the paint itself… it’s thick and dry on the walls, but the mountains just dissolve into a wash of air. The light rests so evenly over everything. The shadows are long and gentle. The scene settles into a hush that feels older than this one afternoon, as time slows against the patient weight of the hillside.
