Hydra Boats and Small Boats – No Sky
MK775
About This Work
Hydra's wooden boats crowd the shoreline, white hulls tight against deep turquoise — no sky, just concentrated sun and water.
Without any sky, our attention settles right here at the water's edge. The wooden boats rest in a staggered line, their whitewashed hulls breathing against the deep teal of the water and the warm ochres in the wood. An unseen sun presses down, sharp and Mediterranean, casting crisp shadows beneath them and finding the grain in the old planks. You can feel the texture of the paint—thick and confident where it's layered, almost scoured away where the wood has bleached. All the brightness seems to gather on the water itself. A quiet settles over the harbor, the kind that holds a working morning before anyone arrives.
