About This Work

Cubic houses rise toward Paros's cobalt domes, their pale walls pressed flat under a sun that leaves almost no shadow.

There’s a deep stillness to this place, isn't there? A warmth that has settled over everything. The houses seem to carry it as they climb the hill. You just follow the clean lines of their rooftops upward, this sea of white punctuated by those sharp, deep blues on the domes and shutters. Between the walls, the ground is all warm ochre and baked terracotta. You can almost feel the difference in the paint—how it lies so flat and smooth on the architecture, then gets drier and rougher where it describes the earth. And the light falls so directly, leaving only the thinnest lavender shadows hiding beneath the eaves. Just a touch of pale gold seems to press into the highest walls, where the sun is strongest. Nothing hurries. Time itself feels held in the heat that rises from the stones.
