Florence, Riverside

About This Work
The Arno mirrors Florence back to itself—pale stone, cool water, a bridge spanning the middle distance.
This whole scene feels held in the light—a deep, warm quiet. The river carries the eye with it, past the near bank toward the soft arch of that bridge and the pale building fronts stacked on the other side. Look how the warm ochre of the walls meets the river’s cool blues. The paint feels different, too. It’s thick and rough for the stone and sun-baked tiles, but the water is just one long, smooth stroke. Light comes in low, warming the upper stories. And down below, those tiny figures give all this grandeur its scale. A quiet settles over the water, the kind that holds a city between one hour and the next.
