Hydra from My Window

Hydra's rooftops descend in tiers toward the harbor, terracotta against white, cobalt water anchoring the bottom of the frame.

Everything is held in this bright, clear light. We’re looking from a window, I think, over the close rooftops and down toward the harbor. The whole town seems to spill down the hillside to meet the water. The colors are so pure—just that deep sea-cobalt, the warm earth of the tiles, and the brilliant white walls. Strong sun carves out clean, sharp shadows, giving every building its form. But then the paint on the water softens, letting the light just rest on the surface. Midday quiet settles over the island, holding the moment just a little longer than it should.
