Hydra, Harbor View from Above
M2147
About This Work
Whitewashed cubes tumble down toward a turquoise harbor, terracotta roofs catching the high sun. The heat sits over everything.
The stillness of the afternoon opens up from this high place. You can almost trace a path down, over the rooftops and through the narrow ways, all the way to that curve of water. The warm ochre of the roofs rests against clean white walls. And then the sea—that deep, impossible blue. Look at the small verticals. The masts and chimneys, just enough to break the calm lines of the water. The paint itself seems to change, too. It’s so smooth on the sunlit walls, but see how it breathes across the water. The sun is almost directly overhead, giving each house its own soft shadow. The air feels still over the harbor, the kind of midday quiet that holds a town in place.
