Makrinitsa, from the Steps, Houses and Mountains
M1712
About This Work
Stone steps climb through Makrinitsa, past stacked terracotta roofs, until the ridges above them fade into lavender.
A deep quiet settles over this whole hillside. The path just leads you upward, between the warm, sun-bleached walls of the houses. It’s a slow climb. You can almost feel the texture change as you go—the roughness of the stone steps giving way to the smooth plaster. All the earthy warmth of the village eventually yields to the cool breath of the mountains beyond, their ridges softening into lavender and blue. The light is so gentle, falling from the side to carve out each building with soft gray shadows instead of hard lines. It's so peaceful. Time slows here, and the village seems to hold its breath at the edge of the afternoon.
