Coastal Rocks and Sea
NK
About This Work
Warm-umber rocks sit heavy and off-center, waves breaking at their base while cool gray-blue water pulls the eye seaward.
There's a quiet that settles over this shoreline—patient, elemental. The rocks anchor the foreground slightly off-center, their mass drawing your eye toward waves that break at their base before dissolving into softer distance. Cool slate and gray-blue carry the water and sky, while stone holds warm umber and ochre, with violet pressing into the crevices where light can't reach. The brushwork changes as it recedes: thick and tactile across the rock faces, smoother and more blended where the sea opens out, with scumbling that lifts foam from the wave crests. Low, lateral light picks out damp surfaces and stretches shadows long across the stone. Time settles at the edge of this scene, held by the rhythm of the tide.
