Sifnos, High Rocks and Sea, Two Olive Trees Without Sky
M1901
About This Work
On Sifnos, two olive trees anchor the foreground, their gnarled trunks set against bare rock, the sea cutting across the top with no sky between.
The composition rises from gnarled trunks in the foreground, climbing across sun-bleached cliffs of ochre and burnt sienna before the sea takes the upper register in layered blues—cobalt deepening to teal. There is no sky, only that abrupt horizon where water meets the cropped edge, which compresses everything and presses land and sea into direct conversation. Thick paint models the rocks and bark with real weight, while thinner washes carry the water's surface, and drybrush catches the sparse foliage. Hard edges between stone and sea give the scene its austerity. Light is even, diffused, and the island simply endures in that long Aegean hush where time settles.
