Houses in a Mountain Village
M998
About This Work
Stone houses cluster up the hillside, ochre walls pressed close against terracotta roofs, a narrow path cutting through toward the ridge.
The whole village seems to hold the warmth of a long afternoon. Your eye just naturally follows the roofs upward, one overlapping the next as they step into the hillside. Look at the warm ochre of the walls against the terracotta tiles, with those small breaths of sage and cool blue in the shutters. The paint itself feels different depending on where you look—smooth on the plaster, then rough and thick over the tiles and rocky ground. Light comes in softly from the side, shaping each building. And the cool shade answers the warmth of the stone. A narrow path winds its way up through it all. Late warmth settles over the slope, and time slows to the edge of dusk.
