Hydra General View from Across, Evening Lights
M1714
About This Work
Hydra's lit windows read across the channel, each one doubled in the harbour's surface, warm and slightly dissolved.
The eye moves across a band of quiet harbour to the cluster of whitewashed houses that line Hydra opposite, then drifts upward to soft hills meeting an indigo sky. Deep violet, ochre, and silvery gray carry the scene, with small accents of terracotta in the roofs and warm gold in the windows. The water is laid in smoother, blended strokes, while the buildings are built up in shorter, textured touches, a few thicker dabs catching where lamps burn brightest. Light comes from those small artificial sources and from the last cool wash of dusk above, so shadows fall in gentle umbers rather than sharp blacks. Across the channel, the town holds its quiet. Evening settles over the harbour and rests there, unhurried, between day and night.
