About This Work

A pale statue anchors Hydra's harbor above the moored kaikia, the composition closed tight—no sky, only stone, water, and hull.

A quiet settles over everything. The weight of the scene rests low in the frame—in those layered wooden hulls against the stone quay—but the figure lifts the eye upward. All the color feels sun-bleached. You see it in the weathered ochre and white of the stone, answered by the water’s muted blues and greens. The boats themselves hold such warm, earthy tones. The brushwork is so controlled, yet the paint gets thicker on the rough stone or the texture of a rope, then softens right where the hulls meet the sea. The light is even, without any deep shadows. And with no sky to open it up, the boats and the statue feel caught in their own conversation. Time slows here, at the water’s edge.
