Kytnos, Houses
M2023
About This Work
Kythnos houses stack close up the hillside, flat roof meeting flat roof, pale walls drawn full into the midday light.
The eye enters from the lower left and travels diagonally upward through the village, where overlapping cubic forms recede into softer distance. Crisp whites carry the strongest light, set against soft ochre paths and terracotta tiles, with muted blue touching shutters and doorways. Brushwork shifts as it moves: precise marks define window frames and roof edges, while looser strokes suggest weathered plaster and dusty stone underfoot. Light reads as midday, diffused and even, modeling volume through gentle shifts between cool and warm rather than hard shadow. Thicker paint catches on sunlit walls; thinner washes settle into the shaded alleys between houses. The whole scene holds a slow, sun-warmed quiet that rests at the edge of time.
