About This Work

A lone steamship traces its course between Psila and Velo, thin smoke rising slowly into an overcast sky.

A deep quiet holds the entire scene. The ship just holds its course, low on the horizon, letting the sea and sky feel immense. The water is all cool slate and blue, with just a touch of light catching the swell. Look at the ship itself—the warm, chalky paint on the hull feels weathered by salt. The paint is smooth on the water, but you can feel the drag of the brush along the vessel’s old frame. The light is so soft. No sharp shadows anywhere. It gives the ship this gentle weight against the haze of that far-off coast. A faint melancholy carries on the water, as if time itself has slowed to watch it pass.
