Chios, Ochre House, Trees, Mountains
M1998
About This Work
On Chios, an ochre house sits in the middle distance, its plastered walls catching flat afternoon light, mountains receding behind it.
Trees anchor the foreground, their trunks worked in tactile strokes of olive and sage, leading inward toward the dwelling. The house, painted in warm ochre and earthy yellow, rests off-center while mountains rise behind it in soft layered planes of grey and lavender, dissolving into pale sky. Brushwork shifts as the eye travels—dry and broken across the rough walls, more blended in the receding slopes. Light falls clear and directional, softening shadows rather than cutting them. Heat settles over everything, slow and patient, holding the afternoon in place.
